Therapeutic Services

At Open Circle Psychology, we offer a wide range of services to help you with various mental health challenges. Our clinicians specialize in anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, PTSD, personality disorders, family stress/conflict, workplace stress/burnout, caregiver fatigue, relationship issues, minority stress, grief and loss, general stress, self-exploration, survivors of abuse, and more. We offer a safe and confidential space to help you reach your therapeutic goals.

Personal Growth

Embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth with our tailored counseling sessions. Our clinicians are here to guide you through life's challenges, help you unlock your potential, break unwanted habits, challenge your negative thought patterns, connect with your emotions, and achieve a deeper understanding of yourself.

2SLGBTQI+ Individuals

We acknowledge the distinct obstacles encountered by the 2SLGBTQI+ community and offer specialized services to target minority stress, sequelae related to gender incongruence and gender identity, and sexuality. Our clinicians are dedicated to establishing a secure and welcoming environment for anyone seeking assistance and direction with their health and gender path.

Couples Treatment

We utilize emotionally focused therapy (EFT), which is an exploration of what each partner in a couple does in the context of the other. Ultimately, EFT helps a couple to build a safe and secure bond. The EFT model is collaborative and non-blaming; the process begins by identifying the negative interactions that get stuck in repeating patterns, as well as naming and exploring feelings that occur during these interactions (and communicating these feelings to the partner). As the negative cycle is understood and conflict is lowered, partners become more willing to take a risk with each other. As emotions are deepened, understood, and shared, partners who were withdrawn re-engage and blaming partners begin to soften. On average, couple therapy takes 15 to 20 sessions, although the negative cycle begins to soften within about six sessions. About 3/4 of couples are able to achieve a safe, secure, bond that is completely new.

Healing & Trauma Recovery

Our specialized services are designed to help individuals suffering from trauma symptoms, PTSD, first responders, RCMP members, veterans, victims of crime, adult survivors of childhood abuse, and of sexual assault experience. We understand the unique challenges that each group faces and we are committed to providing personalized care to support your journey toward wellness. Workplace Support

Struggling to cope with workplace stress or injuries? Our clinicians provide expert guidance to facilitate your return to work, manage workplace stressors, and overcome burnout. We also provide therapeutic services covered by WCB. We are dedicated to supporting your mental well-being in the workplace.

Neurodivergent Individuals

Mental health support is crucial for everyone, especially for neurodivergent individuals. We provide individualized treatments designed to target your specific set of challenges and work collaboratively with you to develop and strengthen life skills, social skills, and emotional regulation. We can help with reducing procrastination, sensory overwhelm, burnout, social and relationship challenges, addiction, impulsivity, and more.

Family/Parenting Support

It can be difficult to know how to support your loved one(s) while also taking care of yourself. Parenting can be stressful and overwhelming, especially when you have other stressors in your life. Our services are designed to help you navigate these challenges and provide you with the support you need. We support partners and family members of veterans and first responders, anyone struggling with caregiver stress, family conflict, and relationship challenges.

What to Expect During Treatment

Session One: Initial Consultation and Historical Interview

In this session, you can expect a confidential and supportive environment. We will discuss your reasons for seeking out treatment and the main challenges you are experiencing.

Primarily, it will involve a historical review of your experiences over your lifespan. This may include family history, childhood experiences, education and work history, interpersonal relationships, and specific mental health challenges. We will collaboratively develop a treatment plan and create goals for therapy.

Subsequent Sessions

We will continue to work towards your therapeutic goals together. During sessions you will be given access to tools, resources and supports to help you along your therapeutic journey.

Termination

You may terminate your sessions at any time. Typically, once you have completed your treatment plan and have met your therapeutic goals, we will begin to talk about termination. Therapy termination marks the conclusion of a therapeutic relationship between a client and their clinician. It's a crucial phase where the focus shifts from ongoing treatment to reflection, consolidation of progress, and preparing for life after therapy. During termination, clients and clinicians review goals achieved, challenges overcome, and skills developed, ensuring a sense of closure and accomplishment. It also allows space to address any remaining concerns or unresolved issues, reinforcing the client's autonomy and self-efficacy. Ultimately, therapy termination aims to facilitate a smooth transition towards greater independence and sustained mental well-being beyond the therapeutic setting.

What to Expect During Assessment

Session One: Initial Consultation and Historical Interview

In this session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking out the assessment and the main challenges you are experiencing.

Primarily,  it will involve a historical review of your experiences over your lifespan. This may include family history, childhood experiences, education and work history, interpersonal relationships, and specific mental health challenges.

Please bring copies of report cards, previous assessments, transcripts, or any additional paperwork, notes, or information you might have to the assessment. This is not necessary, but often can be helpful. Please let us know if you have had prior psychiatric or psychological assessment when you book the appointment; we will attempt to procure these prior to your assessment to ensure we have everything we need.

Diagnostic Interview

This session will also include a diagnostic interview, where the clinician uses a semi-structured diagnostic interview that maps onto DSM-5-TR symptoms and signs. If there are other problems relevant to the diagnosis that need to be assessed, the assessment process might take longer (i.e., we might need additional time with you for interview or for completing measures).

Secondary Assessment Measures

If necessary, your clinician will ask you to complete secondary assessment measures. The secondary measures provide further evidence of your primary symptoms, as well as evaluate specific areas of difficulty. Please note that we use broad-based personality measures and examine your whole experience, not simply the diagnosis you are seeking to clarify. It is always a risk to find out things you did not know about yourself; most people coming in for assessment show remarkable courage in their willingness to explore themselves.

Collateral Interview

Depending on the type of assessment, your psychologist might conduct an interview with somebody who is very close to you or knows you very well. This person would preferably be a parent, but we understand that this is not always possible or preferable, so it is acceptable for the informant to be a spouse, partner, or friend. Admin will book this appointment when your assessment is booked and you will be billed for this appointment.

Psychological Report

We write a report that generally takes several hours of time to complete. The report will be sent to you and your family practitioner with your permission. The report will include a summary of your social, academic, and mental health history. It will include a summary section outlining specific recommendations for you personally as well as potential academic or workplace accommodations. At times, it might be necessary to prepare an additional report specifically for your workplace. This will be completed at an additional charge.

Follow Up

Once you have received the assessment report, please take some time to read it over and self-reflect. We will schedule a session with you to discuss the report, pros and cons of treatment options, or other questions or concerns. In this session, we outline a step by step plan to deal with the problem(s). If you would like to schedule therapy sessions to work on challenges following the assessment, we are also able to accommodate this (although there might be a wait between finishing the assessment and starting therapy due to scheduling).
